Bavarian Lights WIP

I thought it was about time these guys were brought out of their Chinese take-away boxes and restarted. I was really enjoying painting my Bavarians when I decided everything should be put away until the dust in the loft settled.

I finished the remaining base colours and stuck them onto some new bases last week. So with a day off today I got the white glue out and stuck on some sand, let it dry and then cleaned up around the feet etc then sealed the sand in with a very thin coat of PVA.

Next step will be to get the ground work painted, dry brushed and then tidy up the black undercoat on the areas I have rubbed off before I finish the detail work (buttons, highlights weapons etc).

Despite the many false starts with them they are starting to come together. I should have finished them long ago so if I get them finished by the end of October I'll be happy!

  1. Great painting! I like the stand where there's a dead figure and a poor chap falling, very nice!

  2. Coming along very nicely, Paul! The Bavarians were the first minor state I ever did.

  3. I have even more respect for your painting! How do you manage with all the figures already attached to the base?

The poor beggars a taking a beating; I can spot at least 4 casualties!

Looking forward to the end results.

  6. Thanks very much for all the kind comments. Was feeling pretty embarassed with my progress on these guy.

Hi Ray, Angry L and Rosbif, As I really like the look of the Bavarians I wanted to make as many figures look different as possible to make them unique to my own collection. possibly I have to many getting shot? My brother David isn't keen on casualties in his units). I think it gives the feel of the fighting with the Russians of 1812. Also I will be mostly playing the Russians so it doesn't hurt to knock a few off before the game starts!

Rosbif, I usually get my figures nearer completion before basing them but I was desperate to get them going again. All the difficult stuff has been done so shouldn't be difficult to get in and around them.

    Thanks again
    Paul

  8. These are beautifully painted with excellent composition - more of a diorama than a wargames unit. You always impress me!

    Cheers

  9. They make a very nice unit. I think you're spot on to want to make it 'your' unit and give it some flair. I think there are too many wargamers like me who just want to bash the damn things out!

  10. Thanks for the kind comments guys, 1 day I will get them (and some others finsihed!).

Crazy Joe I think I need to bash some more out pretty soon to add to my unit numbers, work is getting in the way of any painting time at the moment. (not complaining about the work as I know I am lucky to have it)
    regards

  13. How can one not love the Bavarians? I've got hundreds of them to represent their 1812 corps and it's good to see others love them too. Painted overseas or not, they're eye candy for the table.
