Brandenburg Hussars WIP

Well I'm very happy to say I finally finished my AB Brandenburg hussars!!! The figures were originally painted by Darren and I spent time turning them to my own style using the original paint as a base coat.

8 figures are 100% my own painted from scratch and the rest are very heavily repainted and highlighted.

I was going to hold off showing them until I finished the bases however I plan on keeping the painting going while my leg is healing. These guys are also my 1st light cavalry finished for either of my Prussian or Russian armies however I plan to add a set of lancers very soon.

I'm really happy how the trumpeters and officers came out, as the eye candy of the unit I'm glad they ended up looking sharpe. I've also been experimenting with new flesh shades and I'm very positive about them to.

I added a wee bit of detail to the sabretache to give the impression of the Royal logo but it isn't perfect. The only area i am not 100% happy with are the overalls as I felt they were a little to heavily painted after I had finished them.

All in all I'm happy with the unit plus it's another cavalry regiment for my Prussian army and also another unit ticked off the Katzbach OOB!

I'm going to slide over to Prussian dragoons next as I bought a good number from Darren already painted and I reckon with a bit of work I should be able to make up 2 regiments (Lithuanians and Neumark).

Wish me luck . . .

  1. These turned out very good, well done. I think you are being a little to critical of the overalls, nothing wrong with them.
For the Dragoons, will you use a specific paint for the coats or mix your own?
I have some to paint as well.

  2. Hi Mike, With the overalls it was mainly because I felt there was to much paint on them. with the dragoons I'm not going to light with them. I did a regiment of OG dragoons a couple of years back and went mid to pale blue and so this time I'm going to keep to a mid.
    Cheers

  4. Thanks Ben that's really kind of you, great to see more AB fans coming out of the woodwork. What army/armies are you aiming for?

  5. Been very sluggish with the Napoleonics lately, but this has got the juices flowing again.

I hate basing, but I'd be wary of waiting too long and cracking on with painting because that way you end up with lots of bases to do and it becomes a daunting prospect.

  13. "What army/armies are you aiming for?"

I would like to finish my small French brigade, as well as an Austrain brigade in the future: both for 1809.
And possibly the 1808 British Light Brigade, eventually...
Here is something worth looking at:

  19. Thanks for all your positive feedback guys, the loft is roasting even with the windows open however im pressing on with my AB Prussian dragoons. I have a few little stumbling blocks on the uniform and have posted questions on TMP.
The figures are a little bit of repainting and cleaning so fingers crossed they turn out ok.

  20. Hi Paul,

Sorry missed this post - the Prussian hussars are great. You have a much steadier hand than me! I usually make a right mess of the swallows wings (trumpeters)

    Cheers

  24. thanks so much for your kind comments guys, you have really given be a lift with this brain numbing injury... It appears the best place for me is in the loft as at least I have plenty of fresh air and the chair has wheels. I'm not sure if I will be able to paint every day as it may kill the buzz but I may give JJ's 30 day advice a go. I'm very well through the dragoons however I'll have to take a stab at any smaller detail I don't know. I asked questions over on TMP however didn't really get any takers, which is unusual?

they have been a little more challenging than i hoped due to them having to be striped from bases and already having a coat of paint but they are looking ok and the figures of my own i added in painted up nice.

    I'll post WIP pics soon
    Best regards
    Paul

  25. Sheer brilliance. I especially admire the piping you have done on the trim of the dolman, and lower edge of the pelisse. I will check TMP for your dragoon question.
