Saxon Foot Artillery 1812-13 WIP

I've decided to ditch my Prussians for the moment as I've been getting an itch to work on another project, it's only temporary as I always come back to my Prussian in the end however for the moment I'm all prussian'd out! Anyway for a good while I've felt a pull to do work on my late Saxons. So 1st up is the artillery. I did a little video of the progress:

And as usual some pics of the battery below

1st I'm going to paint a 4 gun battery, they may well have been 3 gun so I'll just drop 1 if the OOB demands. The uniform is lovely a dark to mid green coat with red facings. Who says green and red don't go! This pic was taken a few days ago so I've made further progress on the troops.

My test figures 90% finished. Unfortunately the figures required a lot of clean up with scalpel and files however the figures themself are lovely.

I decided to do a little bit of converting on the artillery pieces using Stephen Summerfield's book on Saxon artillery as well as the Calpe and Westfalia guns as a reference. They won't be perfect but in 15mm who will care!

The gun tubes are progressing well, the smooth tube and stylish rim around the muzzle are very characteristic of the Saxon M1810 6pdr (and 12pdr). A little more work and they will be ready to paint.

Hope everyone is enjoying our little hobby and happy wargaming!!!

  2. Very nice. The Green and red is perfect together. I am very fond of my lil Saxon artillery crews :) Interesting little bit about the Saxon 6 & 12 # guns. Very unique look to them. I didn't convert mine - in 10mm - but I would deff, do so in a larger scale. Such is the fun of Napoleonic wargaming and collecting.

    Well done Paul. Looks great.

    1. Thanks Kurtus, the info on the guns has just came about in the past few years. No doubt if it was about when AB did his Saxons they would have the guns. All the 28's manufacturers seem to have them now. I'm just looking for a good similarity to the actual guns, in 10mm I wouldn't have bothered either.

  3. Paul, I am curious what manufacturers do you generally use.

    1. Usually AB John, I also have some old glory Prussians to paint up but I mainly paint AB.
If your going for Saxons I had some problems with the cast of some of the last infantry figures I bought. I have informed fighting15's of the problem and he says he will take a look at the mould next time he casts them so should be sorted.

  5. Very nice work on them! Nice little conversion as well. These are certainly something to use as an inspiration as I'm working on the Saxons for 1813 myself as well.

    1. Cheers Gav, yeah the faces have came it well on most of the figures. The ramrod ramming figures are the only ones who didn't come out great as there seemed less detail but they do fine.

    1. Thanks Peter, it's quite appropriate for the season as its pretty close to holly and the odd red berry. It has been in my mind to convert guns since seeing some images of them online by Stephen summerfield. Then Calpe and westfalia released them.

    1. Thanks Phil, hope they come out alright. I'm not looking for perfection with them just a good representation. Got some inspiration to flip over from your Saxon army. You took me by surprise. I got lost on YouTube for a while then come back to blogging and your well in the way with a Saxon army of elites. Very nice to see!!!

    1. Thanks Rodger, I've now finished the crews. The colour combinations are nice on the eye. Make a pleasant change from the Prussian blue I've done the past couple years.

  12. Paul: They'll be on my blog. I've only done the first test minis until now. Will start painting them more actively in a couple of weeks: http://engineered-gaming.blogspot.fi/2015/11/saxon-paint-test.html

    1. Thanks Giles, surprisingly it's a nice colour match, very similar to a French dragoon regiment I think the 5th or 6th?

Very pretty Paul! Theses are a lovely complement to your other "Saxon Dogs". Intriguing flare on the gun muzzles. Splendid work as always!

    1. Thanks Craig, let's see how long I can focus on them before I jump. I'm pretty excited by then at the moment! Yes the guns are interesting with the smooth barrels and interesting muzzle shape.
