Saxon Guard Project 1

Sorry for the lack of posts, I've been having work done around the house, a new tiled roof and boiler fitted. Unfortunately it didn't all go smoothly so the hobbying side of life slowed down a good bit.

Thankfully fingers crossed I can now get back to life and painting. I've been working on the Saxon Guard battalion I converted and I'm at the half way point.

These guys are for 1813, there is some debate around what headgear they wore in battle. I've gone with bearskins, it would have been far easier with shakos however I took Kawe of Westfakia Miniatures advice and went with the head swaps.

So 16 down, 16 to go. They have been a lot of fun so far. The pics aren't great as I did them with my samsung phone and the quality is far to good. Makes the finish look very rough.

    Great work!

    At least according to what I've read they wore shakos on campaign and decided to go with that myself. Though looking at your stuff bearskins would probably have been a better choice. Great way to make them stand out from the rest of the army. And bearskins always look amazing!

      Thanks Samuli, I would tend to agree on the shako however kawe at Westfakia has seen 2 German references that claim they gave their shako to the poles. That's good enough for me 😎

    Absolutely love these Paul, wonderful work. I think I read somewhere that in 1813 they were attached to Napoleons Guards during the fighting in Saxony. They will be a stunning unit.

      Thanks very much Christopher. A nice choice of uniform by the Saxons. The red should stand out well amongst the white line and grenadiers and the duller light infantry.

    Great looking unit - I painted it a couple of years back, but with Shakos rather than Bearskins.

    projects on hold at the moment due to too many work commitments, but back soon....

      Will look superb in shako with the white plume or pompoms. I think we all go through patches where we have no time to paint. It can be a bit of a killer. Hope your back painting soon!

      quick question - what size bases do you use for your cavalry stands?

      For the cavalry I was recommended a 12mm front per figure and the guys base in 3s or 4s for guard/heavies. 36mm front or 48mm by 30mm deep. I base in 3s or 4s depending on the arithmetic 😶 2mmdeep bases lazer cut from warbases.

    A most encouraging work in progress report Paul. The Samsung took good enough photos to reveal the beginnings of a great battalion.

    There should be one of these battalions in my future as well. Shako or bearskin is as yet unknown.
